How Often Should You Fertilize in South Florida?

The honest answer is “it depends” — on what you’re feeding, what grass you’re growing, and the time of year. But there’s a principle that runs through all of it: in our fast-draining sandy soils, smaller and more frequent beats bigger and rarer, every single time. Here’s how often to feed your lawn, palms, trees, shrubs, and flower beds, and why spoon-feeding is the approach that actually works down here.

Fertilizing in South Florida is genuinely different from fertilizing almost anywhere else in the country, and the reason comes down to the ground under your feet. Our soils are mostly sand — loose, fast-draining, and with very little ability to hold onto nutrients. A national fertilizer label written for the clay-and-loam soils of the Midwest assumes the soil will bank the nutrients you apply and release them slowly over months. Our sand does the opposite: it lets soluble nutrients rush straight through the root zone with the next heavy rain.

That single fact reshapes the whole question of “how often.” The instinct many homeowners bring from up north — dump a big bag of fertilizer down twice a year and forget about it — is precisely the wrong instinct here. A heavy dose on sandy soil mostly feeds the aquifer and the nearest canal, not your lawn. The approach that works is the opposite: little and often, using slow-release sources that meter nutrients out gradually. Why “how often” depends on what you’re feeding

There’s no single fertilizing schedule for a yard, because a yard isn’t one thing. A St. Augustine lawn, a stand of coconut palms, a row of established live oaks, and a bed of seasonal annuals have wildly different appetites and wildly different tolerances. Feeding them all on the same calendar — which is what a one-size-fits-all “lawn and landscape” service effectively does — overfeeds some and starves others. The useful way to think about it is a spectrum of hunger. At one end sit the fast-growing, heavily-cropped plants that you’re constantly removing tissue from — turfgrass you mow every week, and annual flowers you deadhead for continuous bloom. These are the hungriest and need the most frequent feeding. At the other end sit mature trees and established shrubs, which grow slowly, recycle their own leaf litter, and in most cases need little or no supplemental fertilizer at all. Palms are a special case in the middle — not because they’re especially hungry, but because our high-pH soils lock out the specific nutrients palms are most sensitive to, so they need a very particular formula on a steady schedule.

The quick version: lawns and annual flower beds get fed the most often; palms get a specialized palm fertilizer four times a year; established trees and shrubs usually need little to nothing. Whatever you’re feeding, split the yearly amount into smaller, more frequent doses using slow-release sources — that’s the part that matters most on sandy soil.

Lawns: how much nitrogen, and how often

Lawns are the biggest fertilizing question for most homeowners, and nitrogen (N) is the nutrient that drives the schedule. Nitrogen is what produces green color and blade growth, it’s the nutrient turf uses in the greatest quantity, and it’s also the one that leaches away fastest in our sands — which is exactly why it has to be supplied regularly rather than in one or two big hits.

UF/IFAS sets an annual nitrogen budget for each turf species, expressed in pounds of N per 1,000 square feet per year, and it varies by region because South Florida’s near-year-round growing season means our grass simply grows — and eats — for more of the calendar than grass up north. The ranges below are the South Florida figures; the low end of each range produces an acceptable, lower-maintenance lawn, and the high end produces a lush, optimum-quality one.

Notice that the annual budget and the number of applications track together. That’s the key move: you don’t dump the whole yearly amount at once. UF/IFAS is explicit that no single application should exceed 1 pound of N per 1,000 square feet, and no more than 0.7 pound of that should be in quick-release (soluble) form. So a St. Augustine lawn that wants 4–6 pounds of N a year is getting there through roughly four to six modest applications spread across the growing season — not one or two heavy ones. That’s spoon-feeding in practice, and it’s built right into the state guidelines.

Nitrogen needs by cultivar

The three cultivars people ask about most — St. Augustine, Bermuda, and Zoysia — sit at noticeably different points on the appetite scale, and matching your program to the grass you actually have prevents both wasted product and disappointing color.   • St. Augustinegrass — the standard, 4–6 lbs N/year. It’s the default South Florida lawn for good reason: broad, dense, reasonably shade-tolerant, and forgiving. At 4–6 pounds of nitrogen a year split across the season, it holds a rich green without the excessive top-growth that invites thatch and disease. Push it too hard with nitrogen and you actively invite chinch bugs, gray leaf spot, and large patch — so more is genuinely not better here.
  • Bermudagrass — the hungry one, 5–7 lbs N/year. Bermuda has the highest nitrogen appetite of our common lawn grasses and the fastest growth rate, which is why it’s the choice for high-use, high-sun areas and why it demands the most frequent feeding. It also thins badly in shade, so its high N needs only pay off in full sun. If you have bermuda and want it dense, plan on the most applications of any grass on this list.
  • Zoysiagrass — deceptively low-maintenance, 4–6 lbs N/year but usually fed less. Zoysia’s published range runs as high as St. Augustine’s, but because it grows slowly and holds color well, most homeowners keep it toward the lower end and are perfectly happy. Over-fertilizing zoysia mainly builds thatch. It’s a “feed it modestly and leave it alone” grass.
  • A note on the other two: bahiagrass (2–4 lbs N) and centipedegrass (2–3 lbs N) are the low-input grasses, and centipede in particular is easy to kill with kindness — over-fertilizing it causes “centipede decline.” For both, a light hand and an occasional iron application for color, rather than more nitrogen, is usually the right call.

Palms: four times a year, with the right formula

Palms are where South Florida fertilizing gets specific, and where the most expensive mistakes happen. The issue isn’t that palms are especially hungry — it’s that our high-pH, sandy, limestone-influenced soils lock out exactly the nutrients palms are most prone to running short on: potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), and the micronutrient manganese (Mn). A potassium-deficient palm develops translucent yellow-orange spotting and frizzled, dying older fronds; a manganese-deficient palm produces deformed, withered new growth known as “frizzletop.” These deficiencies are common, disfiguring, and sometimes fatal to the palm — and they’re almost entirely a fertilizing problem. UF/IFAS research points to one specific answer: an 8-2-12 fertilizer with 4% magnesium plus a full micronutrient package, in which 100% of the nitrogen, potassium, and magnesium are in slow-release (controlled-release) form. That ratio — low nitrogen, higher potassium, added magnesium and manganese — is designed precisely to counter the deficiencies our soils create. It’s applied at about 15 pounds per 1,000 square feet of bed area, spread evenly from the trunk out to the drip line, four times a year — roughly once every three months.

The single most common palm mistake: feeding palms with regular lawn fertilizer, or letting lawn fertilizer land within about 30 feet of a palm. High-nitrogen turf products actually induce potassium and magnesium deficiency in palms by pushing growth the palm can’t nutritionally support. Use a proper 8-2-12+4Mg palm fertilizer, and keep it — not turf fertilizer — as the product feeding your palms.

Because everything in that palm special is slow-release, four evenly spaced applications keep a steady, low supply of the right nutrients available all year — which is spoon-feeding again, just on a quarterly rhythm. It’s the one part of the landscape where even a low-input, chemical-free program still calls for a regular, deliberate feeding schedule, simply because the soil chemistry gives the palms no other way to get what they need — the reasoning behind our dedicated palm fertilization program.

Trees and shrubs: less than you think

Here’s the part that surprises people: established trees and shrubs usually need little or no supplemental fertilizer at all. UF/IFAS guidance is clear that once woody plants are well-established — generally after their first few years in the ground — they typically don’t require routine feeding. Their roots range far and wide, they recycle nutrients through their own dropped leaves, and in most residential landscapes they pick up plenty of stray nutrition from the lawn program running around them.

Over-fertilizing woody plants isn’t a neutral mistake, either. Excess nitrogen forces a flush of soft, fast growth that means more pruning, more susceptibility to pests, and — for flowering and fruiting plants — often more leaves at the expense of blooms. So the honest frequency for most established trees and shrubs is “rarely, if ever,” and the trigger for feeding should be a visible reason, not the calendar.   • Newly planted trees and shrubs are the exception. During the first couple of years while they establish roots, a light, regular feeding through the growing season helps them fill in — but the emphasis is on light and on establishment, tapering off as the plant matures.
  • Established woody plants generally need nothing extra beyond what the surrounding landscape provides. Fertilize only when there’s a clear signal: genuinely poor growth, or a nutrient deficiency you can actually see in the foliage.
  • Palms are not “trees” for this purpose. Despite looking like trees, they follow the palm schedule above, not the “leave them alone” rule — a distinction that trips up a lot of homeowners.

Ornamentals and flower beds: the frequent feeders

At the opposite end from the trees sit your ornamental beds — annual and seasonal flowering plants like impatiens, pentas, caladiums, and bedding color. These are the other genuinely hungry part of the landscape, for the same underlying reason turf is: you’re constantly pushing them to produce new growth and continuous bloom, and they’re growing in the same nutrient-poor sand that won’t hold a reserve.

Actively blooming annuals and bedding plants often need feeding as frequently as once a month during their growing season to stay in continuous flower — whether that’s a light monthly application of a granular product or a more dilute liquid feed on a similar cadence. This is the one place where frequent feeding is not just tolerated but genuinely required, because the plants are working hard and the sand offers them no pantry to draw from between applications.

Perennial ornamentals and established flowering shrubs sit in between: more than a mature tree, less than a bed of annuals. A few well-timed feedings across the growing season is usually plenty. As always, the delivery principle holds — smaller, more frequent, slow-release-leaning doses beat one heavy application that the next storm will largely flush away. That steady, frequent cadence for beds is what our ornamental and landscape fertilization is built around.

How the season shapes your feeding rhythm

Frequency and timing are two sides of the same coin: how often you feed is really a question of how you spread those doses across the growing season. South Florida’s near-year-round season means we can fertilize across more of the calendar than most of the country — but “can” isn’t “should,” and part of the year is actually off-limits by law. The core rule is to feed when plants are growing and can take the nutrients up. In our climate that means the warm months carry most of the program, with applications spread out rather than front-loaded. The natural anchor points are spring green-up (a first feeding as growth accelerates, typically around April), early fall (a feeding as the summer restrictions lift), and — for year-round South Florida growth — modest feedings in between as the schedule and the rules allow. What you want to avoid is fertilizing dormant or barely-growing plants in the coolest part of winter, when they can’t use much and the nutrients just sit there or leach.

The summer fertilizer blackout

This is the timing rule that catches newcomers off guard: many South Florida municipalities, including much of Palm Beach County, enforce a summer fertilizer blackout that prohibits applying any fertilizer containing nitrogen or phosphorus to your lawn and landscape during the rainy season. The typical window runs June 1 through September 30, though some jurisdictions extend it through October 31 — and the exact dates vary by city, so it’s worth confirming your local ordinance.

The logic is environmental and specific to our geography. June through October is when we get the heaviest rain and the tropical systems, and nitrogen or phosphorus applied then is very likely to wash off the sandy soil and into storm drains, canals, and ultimately the waterways, where those same nutrients fuel algae blooms. So the blackout isn’t bureaucratic overreach — it’s a direct response to the fact that summer fertilizer on sand mostly ends up in the water, not the lawn.

  • What you can still do in summer: the blackout targets nitrogen and phosphorus, so a potassium-only product is generally still permitted and is a smart way to support root strength and stress tolerance through the hardest months. How spoon-feeding works — and why it wins on sand

Everything above keeps circling back to one idea, so it’s worth making it explicit. Spoon-feeding means dividing the amount of fertilizer a plant needs over the year into smaller, more frequent doses — feeding the plant a steady trickle rather than a few big meals — and leaning on slow-release nutrient sources that dissolve gradually instead of all at once.

On the heavy, nutrient-holding soils of other regions, the big-meal approach can work because the soil itself acts as a storage tank: it holds a large dose and releases it to roots over time. South Florida sand has almost none of that storage capacity. It’s the difference between a pantry and a sieve. When you apply a heavy dose of soluble fertilizer to sand, three things happen, none of them good: the plant can only use a fraction of it at once, the excess leaches straight past the roots with the next rain or irrigation, and that leached nitrogen and phosphorus ends up in the aquifer and the waterways. You’ve paid for fertilizer that fed the algae instead of your lawn.

Spoon-feeding fixes all three problems at once:

  • Less leaching, less waste. A smaller dose is an amount the plant can actually absorb before the next storm moves water through the soil. Very little is left over to wash away, so more of what you apply becomes green grass instead of pollution. UF/IFAS notes that properly fertilized turf leaches very little nitrogen — it’s the heavy, infrequent doses on under-managed lawns that leak.
  • Steadier, more even color. Big soluble doses produce a surge of fast growth and dark color that fades as the nitrogen flushes through — a feast-then-famine cycle. Frequent small doses hold the plant at a consistent, healthy color and a steady growth rate, which also means less thatch and less disease pressure than the boom-bust of heavy feeding.
  • Slow-release does the spoon-feeding for you. This is why the state guidelines cap soluble nitrogen at 0.7 lb per 1,000 sq ft but allow up to 2 lbs per application when most of it is controlled-release. A controlled-release granule is essentially a time-capsule that meters nutrients out over weeks, so a single application behaves like many tiny ones — automatic spoon-feeding. Put simply: our sand can’t store nutrients for the plant, so you have to supply them at the rate the plant uses them.
