Most “burned” lawns in July aren’t burned by the sun — they’re burned by what someone put down. The good news: burn risk is predictable. It comes down to a product’s salt load, the rate you apply, and how hot and dry the lawn is when you do it. Here’s the product-by-product breakdown for South Florida summers.

Every summer we get the same call. A homeowner fed their lawn over the weekend, a heat wave rolled through, and by Wednesday there are brown stripes tracing exactly where the spreader went. The lawn didn’t get sunburned. It got salt-burned — and the product, the rate, and the timing were the whole story.

“Lawn burn” is one of the most misunderstood problems in turf care, partly because several different things all get lumped under the same name. The encouraging part is that burn is almost entirely avoidable once you understand what actually causes it. It is not bad luck, and it is rarely the weather alone. It is a predictable chemical reaction that you control through three levers: the product you choose, the rate you apply it at, and the conditions you apply it in.

This guide is built to be genuinely useful whether you’re a homeowner deciding what to buy at the store this weekend, a property manager writing a summer scope for a crew, or a hands-on DIYer who wants to understand the chemistry well enough to make your own calls. One prerequisite worth flagging up front: in Palm Beach County, a nitrogen-and-phosphorus fertilizer summer blackout runs June 1 through September 30 (extended to October 31 in some municipalities). That means the highest-burn-risk products — the nitrogen fertilizers and weed-and-feeds — are off the table by law during exactly the months this article is about. That’s not a coincidence. Reducing burn and runoff is part of why the ordinance exists.

What “burning” actually means

When people say a product burned their lawn, they’re usually describing one of two genuinely different problems. Knowing which one you’re looking at changes how you prevent it — and how you fix it.

The most common is fertilizer burn, and despite the name it isn’t a burn in the heat sense at all. It’s dehydration driven by salt. Fertilizers are made of mineral salts, and plant roots take up water and nutrients through their cell membranes by osmosis — water naturally moves toward the side with the higher salt concentration. When too much fertilizer salt concentrates in the soil around the roots, that gradient reverses. Instead of pulling water in, the grass loses water out to the surrounding soil, dries out from the inside, and turns the crispy, straw-brown color everyone recognizes. The tells are distinctive: grass that’s crunchy rather than wilted to the touch, sometimes a faint white salt crust on the soil surface, and damage that mirrors the spreader pattern in stripes or a checkerboard.

The second is chemical scorch, where a herbicide or a concentrated product damages leaf tissue directly. This is the kind that is genuinely temperature-driven. Many herbicides become far more likely to injure the grass itself once the air gets hot, because the grass is already stressed and the chemistry becomes more aggressive — which is why so many product labels carry an explicit upper temperature limit.

Heat and drought amplify both mechanisms at once. A lawn already stressed by high temperatures and limited soil moisture has almost no buffer. Salts concentrate faster in dry soil because there’s less water to dilute them, evaporation pulls moisture out of the blades faster, and the grass has no spare capacity to recover from a chemical hit. The same bag that’s perfectly safe on a moist lawn in March can scorch that identical lawn in July. The product didn’t change — the conditions did.

Products most likely to burn in summer heat

Burn risk isn’t evenly distributed across the shelf. A handful of product categories cause the overwhelming majority of the damage we see, and they share a common trait: they dump a large load of soluble salt or active chemistry onto stressed grass all at once. If you remember nothing else, remember these four.

Quick-release synthetic nitrogen

This is the number-one culprit, full stop. Fast-release nitrogen sources like urea and ammonium sulfate dissolve almost immediately and deliver a large dose of highly soluble salts to the root zone in one shot. Ammonium sulfate in particular carries a higher salt index and burn potential than urea on a per-pound-of-nitrogen basis, and it’s strongly acidifying on top of that. On a hot, dry summer lawn, that instant salt spike is exactly what the turf can’t absorb safely — the roots are already struggling to hold water, and the salt surge tips them into net water loss. The risk climbs further when the lawn is drought-stressed before you even apply. The classic failure case: a homeowner grabs a high-nitrogen “summer green-up” bag (think 24-0-11 or 29-0-4), applies it on a Saturday afternoon, and a heat wave does the rest.

“Weed and feed” combination products

These carry doubled risk because they pair fast nitrogen with a broadleaf herbicide. In South Florida that herbicide is very often atrazine, and the temperature problem is acute. UF/IFAS guidance is explicit that atrazine can damage St. Augustinegrass — Floratam especially — when applied above roughly 85°F. In our climate, daytime highs clear 85°F on most days from late spring through September, which is precisely when summer broadleaf weeds and crabgrass show up and tempt people into buying these products. So the window where a weed-and-feed is both useful and safe is nearly nonexistent here in the warm months. Add the fact that the nitrogen half can’t be legally applied during the blackout, and the conclusion is simple: summer is the wrong season for these products in Palm Beach County. Atrazine belongs in the cooler fall-through-winter window.

High-rate iron and micronutrient products

Iron is a genuinely useful summer tool for color — we’ll come back to it on the safe list — but it earns a spot here too, because applied at too high a rate or to a hot, dry lawn it can leave dark streaks and burn marks. It will also permanently stain concrete, pavers, driveways, and stucco walls on contact, which turns a color application into an expensive cleanup. Burn from iron is almost always a rate-and-conditions problem rather than the product itself, but it’s common enough that it belongs on the caution list.

Concentrated, undiluted liquids

Almost any concentrated liquid product is risky in heat if there isn’t enough water to dilute it and carry it off the leaf blades. Sitting on hot foliage in full sun, concentrated salts scorch the tissue directly — and liquids dry fast on a hot day, leaving the salt behind before it can move into the soil. Liquids are very controllable when applied correctly and watered in; the danger is over-concentration, uneven application, and skipping the water-in step. DIYers who mix their own from concentrate are most at risk here, because a too-strong batch is easy to make and impossible to undo once it’s down.

Products that are generally safe in summer

The flip side is just as clear. The safest summer products share the opposite traits: low salt load, slow or gradual release, and a tendency to support stress tolerance rather than force a flush of soft new growth. These are the products that belong in a summer program here.

Potassium-only products (the summer workhorse)

Potassium is the single most valuable summer nutrient in our climate, because it supports root health, drought tolerance, cell-wall strength, and overall heat-stress resilience without forcing the soft top growth that nitrogen drives. The catch is that the source matters enormously for burn risk. Sulfate of potash (0-0-50, often labeled SOP) has a salt index of roughly 0.85 per unit of nutrient, while muriate of potash (potassium chloride, 0-0-60, or MOP) sits around 1.93 — more than double — and is about 47% chloride, essentially a relative of table salt. For summer use, SOP is the clear choice: it’s low-salt, nearly chloride-free, and adds beneficial sulfur as a bonus. Superintendents apply it during peak heat on golf greens precisely because it doesn’t burn. Because potassium-only products carry no nitrogen or phosphorus, SOP is also fully compliant during the Palm Beach County blackout, which is why it anchors every summer program we build.

Slow-release and coated fertilizers

When fertilizing is legal and warranted (think the fall rebuild after the blackout lifts, not mid-summer), slow- and controlled-release nitrogen sources are the safe default. They meter out nutrients gradually over weeks instead of all at once, which dramatically lowers burn risk. UF/IFAS specifically recommends choosing fertilizers whose nitrogen is primarily slow-release for exactly this reason, and notes it matters even more in Florida, where heavy seasonal rain can leach quick-release nitrogen before the grass even uses it. Many local ordinances require at least 50% slow-release content. The trade-off is patience — you won’t see an overnight color pop — but you also won’t see brown stripes.

Compost and organic amendments

Compost, composted manure, and most organic granular fertilizers have very low salt indexes and release nutrients slowly through microbial activity rather than dissolving instantly into the soil solution. They’re among the hardest products to burn a lawn with, even in heat, because there’s no salt spike to concentrate around the roots. They also feed soil biology, which compounds into better long-term resilience. The trade-off is that they’re bulkier to apply and slower to show results — fine for a steady program, less satisfying if you want instant green.

Soil conditioners and biostimulants

Humic and fulvic acids, seaweed and kelp extracts, and microbial inoculants improve root function, nutrient uptake, and stress tolerance with negligible salt load. They don’t green a lawn the way nitrogen does; instead they help the grass ride out heat and use what’s already in the soil more efficiently. Think of them as conditioning rather than feeding — and they’re entirely blackout-compliant.

Chelated iron (applied correctly)

Iron deserves a place on both lists, because the same product is either your best summer color tool or a streaking hazard depending entirely on how you use it. Applied at the label rate, in the cool part of the day, chelated iron delivers deep green color in 48 to 72 hours without forcing any new growth — which makes it ideal on South Florida’s alkaline coastal soils, where summer yellowing is more often iron deficiency than nitrogen deficiency. Over-applied, or laid down on a hot, bone-dry lawn, it’s what causes the dark streaks. Rate and conditions are everything, and keep it well clear of any hardscape.

  • The summer-safe shortlist: sulfate of potash (0-0-50) for stress resilience, compost and organic amendments, humic/fulvic acid and kelp biostimulants, and chelated iron at label rate for color. All low-salt, none forcing a growth flush, and all compliant with the Palm Beach County nitrogen-and-phosphorus blackout.

The factors that actually decide burn risk

Whether a product burns has less to do with the product in isolation and far more to do with the conditions around the application. This is the mental model that separates people who never burn a lawn from people who do it every July. Five variables drive almost all of it:

  • Salt index. The higher a fertilizer’s salt index, the greater the burn potential per pound applied. Potassium chloride (~1.93/unit) and ammonium sulfate sit high; sulfate of potash (~0.85/unit), slow-release, and organic products sit low. This is the single biggest product-level difference, and it’s worth checking before you buy.
  • Application rate. Most burn comes from applying too much — overlapping spreader passes, miscalculating square footage, dumping a pile while filling the hopper, or adding “a little extra for good measure.” Florida’s urban turf rule caps any single application at 1 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft (with soluble nitrogen capped lower still), and that ceiling exists in part to prevent burn. Stay at or below label rate, always.
  • Soil moisture. Dry soil concentrates salts and offers no dilution. A drought-stressed lawn burns far more easily than a well-watered one — which is exactly the condition most lawns are in during a summer dry spell, making this the most underestimated factor of the five.
  • Temperature. High heat increases evaporation, stresses the grass before you’ve applied anything, and pushes temperature-sensitive herbicides past their safe threshold. The 85°F atrazine limit is the clearest example, but heat raises the risk of every product on the cautionary list.
  • Watering-in. Watering a granular product in moves the salts off the blades and down toward the root zone where they belong and get diluted. Skipping it leaves salt sitting on hot foliage to scorch. Roughly a quarter-inch of irrigation right after application is the rule of thumb. (Always check the label — a few foliar products are meant to stay on the leaf and shouldn’t be watered in.)

The three-question gut check: before applying anything in summer, ask — Is this product low-salt and slow-release (or potassium-only)? Is the lawn moist and actively growing rather than dormant and crispy? Can I apply in the cool part of the day and water it in afterward? If you can’t answer yes to all three, wait for a cooler, wetter window. Nothing you’d put down in July can’t wait a week.

How to apply safely when it’s hot

If you do need to put something down during the warm months, the technique matters as much as the product choice. The goal is to minimize stress on the grass and keep salts from concentrating on hot tissue. These steps apply whether you’re doing one residential lawn or scoping a multi-property route.

  • Apply in early morning or evening. Temperatures are lowest and the sun is off the lawn, so both heat stress and evaporation are minimized. For temperature-sensitive products, early morning before the day’s high is reached is the only safe window in a South Florida summer.
  • Never apply to a dormant or drought-stressed lawn. Wait until the lawn has been watered and is actively growing. Feeding crispy, struggling grass is the fastest way to turn mild stress into dead patches — the grass simply can’t use the input and the salt does the rest.
  • Water it in. For granular products, irrigate with about a quarter-inch afterward (unless the label says otherwise) to move salts down to the root zone. This single step prevents a large share of all burn cases and is the most commonly skipped one.
  • Respect the label rate every single time. Don’t exceed it hoping for faster results — over-application is the most common cause of burn there is. Calibrate your spreader, measure your actual square footage rather than guessing, and close the hopper when you stop walking.
  • Sweep product off hardscape. Granules on driveways and sidewalks don’t just risk staining (especially iron); they wash straight into storm drains and waterways, which is both an environmental problem and, in many municipalities, an ordinance violation. Blow or sweep them back onto the lawn.
  • When in doubt during a heat wave, wait. The safest move during a brutal stretch is simply to hold off until conditions cool and the lawn is hydrated.

What to do if your lawn is already burned

If you’re reading this because the stripes have already appeared, the first move is the same regardless of cause: water deeply and repeatedly. Heavy irrigation dilutes the excess salts and flushes them down past the root zone, which stops the dehydration from getting worse. Plan on watering deeply for several days in a row.

After that, the outlook depends on severity. Mild burn that only scorched the leaf blades will usually recover on its own once the salts are flushed and the grass gets a few weeks of hydrated, slightly cooler conditions to push new growth from the crowns — resist the urge to apply anything else in the meantime, since the lawn is already stressed. Severe burn that killed the roots and crowns won’t green back up; those areas will need re-sodding or plugging once the weather moderates. A simple test after a couple of weeks of recovery watering: tug gently on the brown grass. If it’s anchored and you can see green at the base, it’s coming back. If it pulls up with no resistance, that patch is dead and will need replacing. Hold off on any fertilizer until the lawn is clearly recovering and actively growing again.

Fertilizer burn typically follows your application pattern — straight stripes or a checkerboard matching the spreader path — and the grass feels crispy or crunchy to the touch, sometimes with a faint white salt crust on the soil. Drought damage is usually more diffuse and concentrated in the driest, sunniest spots, while disease often shows up as rounded patches or rings. Can I use a weed and feed on my St. Augustine lawn in summer?
